Moroccan Society of Paediatric Nephrology organizing a CME in Marrakech, Morocco, in collaboration with IPNA, ESPN & AFPNA, Thursday 16th-Sat.18th October 2008. This course is meant for all the paediatric nephrologists and general paediatricians that are interested in paediatric nephrology,The organizing committee is doing his best to find affordable housing locations to make it possible for most of our African colleagues to be part of this event. After Budapest, Moroccan Society organized its first national congress in Rabat, with the participation of French speakers including the president of the French society of paediatric nephrology, and the participation of some colleagues from the Maghreb. A project that we want to pursue in the future.
In January, we
organized a seminar of paediatric nephrology in Casablanca,
which was really successful, with some presentations of
practical cases, conferences, debates, documents
distributions. We are hoping to be able to do it in other
cities. Beginning next year, we hope to be able to establish with the medical schools in Casablanca and Rabat a regular course of training in paediatric nephrology. On world kidney day we included children in the screening of kidney diseases in liaison with the media. West & Central Africa 1. Nigerian Association of Paediatric Nephrology was formed on 25th January 2008 with a membership of 35 Paediatric Nephrologists and a maiden meeting held the same day. Their annual meeting will hold yearly (January) during the annual Paediatric Association of Nigeria Conference. 2 A Paediatric Teaching Course in collaboration with IPNA, ISN & Nigerian Association of Nephrology was held 18th to 20th Feb 2008 in Lagos. There were 202 delegates, comprising of 49 Paediatric nephrologists, adult nephrologists, transplant surgeons, nurses & other health care personnel. The theme was renal transplantation in Nigeria and the establishment of a national CKD registry. Papers on the demography of chronic renal failure in children, structures available for renal replacement therapy (RRT) in the developing countries, and a national renal registry etc. were presented. Paediatric invited Guests were Prof Ken Jureidini from Adelaide & Dr. Malcolm Lewis from Manchester, UK. The Lagos Meeting was sponsored by IPNA and we are very grateful. Plans are on the way for the establishment of a national renal Register 3. Just before the Teaching Course from 10th to 16th February the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital invited Dr. Malcolm Lewis and Trish Smith both from Manchester, UK to help us in the planning of a proposed New Renal and Bone Marrow Transplant Centre. The Centre is expected to work in collaboration with them. 4. The next (10th )AFRAN ( African Association of Nephrology ) Congress will hold in collaboration with ISN in Abuja, the new capital of Nigeria from 16th to 19th February 2009. Abstract submission is from 1st August 2008 to 30th Sept. 2008. Unfortunately the planned AFRAN Congress in Kenya this year could not hold because of the recent political unrest in that country.
5. AFPNA in collaboration with
the Paediatric Nigerian Association of Nephrology will hold
its annual Teaching Course from 14th-15th
February 2009, just prec 6. World Kidney Day in Port Harcourt On Thursday 14th March 2008, the Port-Harcourt Chapter of the Nigerian Association of Nephrology (NAN) led by Paediatric Nephrologists organized 2 TV interview, a radio interview, a Seminar and a special World Kidney Day rally and celebration. highlighting the message that Kidney Disease is common, indeed almost reaching a pandemic proportion. They raised public awareness about the importance of the prevention & early treatment of lots of infections often associated with kidney diseases in the developing world. We visited selected secondary schools with educative talks measured blood pressures in 450 students Those with abnormal blood pressures were given referral forms to be followed up at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. Attached are some photos. Hope you all had fun too. South Africa In Johannesburg the last few weeks have been chaotic. In December we managed to have a lovely Christmas party for our children at Gold Reef City So far this year we have done 4 renal transplants in Johannesburg which is wonderful – as we had very few donors last year – and we really felt our transplant program was threatened. Sadly we are to loose a Paediatric Nephrologist from Johannesburg – my colleague Dr Cecil Levy – notified us last week he is going to Australia in June. This will be a great loss to our Paediatric Nephrology community and to our unit. From Durban , S. Africa: 1. SARS Congress from 26-29 June 2008. Will have a paediatric CME with speakers from Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town. 2. Have commissioned chronic dialysis for selected patients over 20kg at IALCH. 3. Dr E Naicker has joined the paediatric nephrology services at IALCH. 4. Participating in a study on paediatric hypertension in children 1-5 years with Norvatis on use of valsartan in treating paediatric hypertension . 5. Given a CME to nurses at St. Augustine's Hospital on urinalysis in children. 6. Updated protocols for management of common paediatric problems and sent to regional hospitals. 7. Commencing a study on HIV related renal diseases in children. Mr Duran Ramsarun is doing this for his MSc Thesis.
